Note that throughout his letters Paul relied on a Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible that came eventually to be known as the Septuagint (LXX), the Bible that was used in all of the Greek-speaking Jewish communities. This was the Bible he would have grown up with in Tarsus and the Bible used by his Greek-speaking churches. This explains why Paul’s citations of the Old Testament often differ (at times considerably so) from many English versions since our versions have all been translated directly from the Hebrew Bible. This means that in modern English Bibles Paul’s “citations” are two languages removed from the original: they are an English translation of the Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible! Thus the content is usually the same, but the way it is said is understandably sometimes a bit different.
